All right, so if you are a communist, what is communism?

What's the kind of society that you'd actually want?

This is not a particularly popular question on the left, not just because it's a really hard one,

but because people like Karl Marx, for example, wrote that they weren't interested in, quote,

writing the recipes for the cook shops of the future.

Stronger still, Mikalbukunin,

who was the most prominent person in the First International alongside Marks, said that anyone

who makes plans after the revolution is a reactionary. But the problem is, the recipe books

of the future are already being written, and they're either coming from the dark kitchens of delivery apps

or their algae growing factories on Mars.

The left can't abandon the terrain of the future.

Increasingly, it's all a lot of people actually have.

So we've got to ask ourselves, what future do we actually want?

And after the end of the 20th century, what does revolution even look like?

My guest this week has written a book that tries to actually answer these questions.

He's Jasper Burns, a communist writer based in Oakland and California.

And in the future of revolution, he traces the history of attempts to build the

commune and what is called the workers' council, right through from the Paris Commune to the

George Floyd uprising of 2020. He tries to discover what we can learn from these struggles,

and what we do now in this moment of confusion and renewal.
