It's one of the world's most brutal occupations.

Over decades, tens of thousands of people have been killed.

Vast numbers tortured, held without charge

under special laws, and the whole space of life has come under surveillance. Then came a terrorist

attack that murdered many civilians of the occupying power. The occupying power often claims to be a

liberal democracy, but is increasingly organized around an exclusionary form of religious supremacism.

The vast majority of those living under the occupation are Muslim,

and despite being the indigenous population of the area,

the occupying power asserts that they are invaders.

I am talking, of course, about Kashmir, a territory disputed between India and Pakistan,

and one that often goes overlooked. It is, for all the silence that surrounds it,

probably the place in the world most likely to trigger a nuclear

war. Especially, that is, when things start to escalate, and last week they escalated very fast.

To understand all this, I spoke to Mohamed Junide, a cultural anthropologist and Kashmiri scholar.
