As a child, my room was in the back of the house next to the kitchen.

My room was constantly awash with the aroma of coffee and bacon and bread in the oven.

Each fragrance was intoxicating, just mouth-watering.

Especially, the smell of baking bread.

My mom would often anticipate the inevitable request and would have a buttered piece waiting

before I asked, just one, she would say with a smile.

You must save some room for dinner.

You can't live by bread alone, I smiled at the reference, but still wanted to tempt

her sweet command.

Maybe just one more.

Well this meditation from Matthew chapter 4 is a reflection on turning from the fleeting

fragrance of the world to a reliance on the eternal provision of God, not depending on

earthly bread, but divine care.

We will be together for about 15 minutes, so begin your meditation, a retreat from the

tempting aroma of the world by softening your gaze and taking deep, slow breaths from

your belly.
