Summary

Notifications North Star, sponsored by Courier! Guest: Stephanie Griffith is an email and SMS marketing expert, and a marketing strategy consultant. She is a startup founder, and has been involved with big names like Drip, Thinkful, Bed Bath & Beyond and more. She is also the host of the Conversational Commerce podcast. Questions: What is the primary goal for someone in your role, which you mention required you to be sending millions of emails a day? So there was a viral HackerNews thread recently, titled "I only like the important notifications, not promotional ones." What does this mean to someone who advises to send promotional messaging for a living? Should we stop sending promotional messages? In the world of messaging, what would the perfect world look like? Do we need to go to detailed preferences for all? As applications evolve and become more complex, notifications become a secondary UX layer that often lives on users devices. How do we keep users from opting out of this critical user experience? What impresses you about Courier, and how they are approaching notifications as a UX layer? Today I have Stephanie Griffith on the show on the Code Story podcast. Stephanie is an email and SMS marketing expert

0:39.6

and a strategy consultant around marketing. She's been involved with big names like Drip,

0:44.6

Thinkful. She's also the host of her own podcast, Conversational Commerce. Stephanie, thank you for being on

0:49.7

the show today. Noah, thank you so much for having me. I'm excited to be here. Before we dive into today's

0:55.2

topic, tell me in my audience a little bit more about you and your background. I have been

1:00.6

largely in the retail and e-commerce marketing space for the better part of the last decade.

1:05.7

My first foray into marketing was at Abercrombie and Fitch. So it was my first post-college

1:10.6

job. And I was actually on the

1:12.6

print production side of things. And that is only relevant to say I learned that I didn't love

1:17.8

print production because I was constantly asking the question, what happens? What happens when we

1:22.9

send signs to stores? What happens when we have a sale and we're communicating it

1:27.8

with folks. And I would be met with the response of we don't know. We can't track the signs.

1:32.9

And so very quickly, that was my cue to jump over to digital marketing, where the tracking is

1:38.1

much more rich. And, you know, selfishly, I think a lot of us are in that space for that reason.

1:42.6

We want to know what our marketing is doing.

1:45.3

I found myself on the email side of things when I made the jump. And my joke is, I didn't choose

1:50.0

email, but I've consciously chosen to stay in it because you get that immediate feedback of,
