Summary

McCartney, the debut album from Paul McCartney, came out in April 1970 just as the headlines announced that he had quit The Beatles. At what point did this album become a solo declaration of intent? At what point did it even become an album? What does Elaine Paige have to do with anything?

Live on tape from Dublin & Belfast, it’s Nothing Is Real.

And we're live on tape from Dublin and Belfast.

Back at the start of season three, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first John Lennon and Yoko Ono solo album's Plastic Ono band.

0:36.3

And today we're going to look at the golden

0:38.5

anniversary of another album that came out in 1970, the debut solo album by Paul McCartney,

0:43.6

which we all should know is called simply McCartney, which is a good record, Stephen. I like it.

0:49.5

Do you like it? I do like it. I do like it. It's hard to separate it from its origins, which is kind of what we're going to talk about today. I think that's right. I mean, it carries a lot of weight as Paul McCartney's. I see what you did there carry that weight. Yeah. It's going to be one of those episodes. Yes, it carries a lot of weight as Paul McCartney's first solo album, but as you say,

1:17.2

So we're going to kind of look at the months leading up to the release of the album because

1:21.1

it seems that there's a given narrative or a story out there that, you know, Paul was pulling himself up by his

1:28.7

bootstraps out of a post-Beatles depression and, and this is his gift to the world to show

1:33.7

how happy he was in his new domestic lifestyle. But it's not really true. If you kind of dig down a bit,

1:40.1

it's a, you know. Yeah, I know, I I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I, I,

1:48.6

that Paul was in a bit of a depression, that he was drinking heavily, that Linda got

1:52.6

him out of this depression by saying, come on, you can make, back in the studio and this will be what's

2:02.4

required and I mean, I've no doubt that he was shaken by the various events that were

2:10.8

happening in 69 around Klein and the various business sort of machinations that were happening.

2:17.2

But I think that period of depression has maybe been not exaggerated, but sort of lengthened,

2:27.3

or maybe the timeline has been twisted slightly.
