Summary

This week The Unspeakable welcomes three guests. Mike Pesca, Virginia Heffernan and Jamie Kirchick are the hosts of the brand new podcast Not Even Mad. Mike, who's the host of the long running podcast The Gist, conceived Not Even Mad as an alternative to the glut of podcasts in which the hosts and guests do nothing but agree with each other. With Virginia representing the political left, Jamie the right and Mike in the middle, Not Even Mad offers balanced, informed discussions that also model civility and mutual respect. In this conversation, the three talk about how they manage this feat, why they hold the political views that they do, and how they stay friends despite strong disagreements. Jamie also shares the secret of becoming an "instant New York Times bestseller." (Hint: it's easier than you think.) In

Welcome to the Unspeakable Podcast. I'm your host, Megan Dahl. Before I introduce this week's guests,

0:10.2

yes, that's guests plural. Just a quick reminder that the next listener Zoom hangout is coming out

0:17.5

this Sunday, November 6th at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. This is for subscribers to the

0:24.9

substack at the founding member level. And it's a great thing. We meet every month on a Sunday

0:32.3

evening for about an hour and a half, sometimes two hours, talk about recent episodes of the podcast,

0:38.9

and I am there. I will facilitate the discussion, and it's a really good thing. So if you want

0:45.6

to join us and you're not yet a founding member, you can go to the substack at megandaum.com

0:52.0

and join us. So again, that's Sunday, November 6th at 8 p.m.

0:56.6

Okay, today's guests are three people. This is historic because I've never interviewed

1:02.0

three people at once on this podcast. They are the hosts of a brand new podcast called Not

1:09.7

Even Mad. They are Virginia Heffernan, Jamie Kirchick, and Mike Peska.

1:15.2

Mike has been a guest on this show before. He is the host of The Gist, very famous, long-running,

1:21.5

daily. That is five days a week political podcast, and he's decided to do a second podcast, because I guess that's what

1:29.4

one does now. So they are here to talk about it. It premiered last Wednesday, October 26th,

1:37.3

and so they're going to tell us what they talk about. This is a little bit different because they do a

1:42.9

lot of the talking. I do attempt to interview

1:45.3

them, but it's a little bit of a new thing to interview three people. There might be moments where

1:50.4

you're wondering why I didn't push back a little bit more to some of the things that the people say.

1:57.2

And I kind of just figured I should let them push back at one another.

2:01.6

So that's kind of the way the way things are going.

2:03.9

I do chime in quite a bit, but that's kind of how things are on this one.

2:07.4

So anyway, here is my conversation.
