Eye on the Sun, the most important star in the whole cosmos according to mankind.

0:15.0

The sunspot update Bob does once a month and we follow the estimates of Noah's

0:21.0

for where we are in the cycle of solar minimum to solar maximum.

0:26.0

Last time I checked we're climbing towards the solar maximum.

0:31.0

But, Bob, solar maximum

0:33.8

maximum what does that represent do we know what it means scientifically

0:37.8

uh... yes and no as always you know they're always questions in the case of the sun

0:42.1

the sun uh... has a magnetic field and it flips its polarity

0:46.7

every 11 years. For some reason, positive goes to negative and negative goes to positive. The

0:51.6

polls become opposite polarity and it

0:54.2

does it every 11 years and in the process of doing that it's been doing this

0:57.6

since this is until early 1700s we've had 24 cycles every 11 years where it flipped its polarity since about 1700 and began

1:07.6

that they began to track this and the way we know it's doing this at least the

1:11.2

first initial guidance for this, is sunspots.

1:14.0

Because as the sun's magnetic field flips, during this 11-year cycle, the amount of sunspots goes up and down.

1:21.0

The activity increases and then decreases, so we get what we call the solar

1:25.1

cycle, the sunspots cycle. And so they track it and there is circumstantial evidence that this

1:31.6

so close, this sunspot cycle increases it.

1:35.7

When the sun is more active, the sun is a little warmer.

1:39.1

And it might actually affect the climate of the Earth.

1:42.4

So tracking is really important. Now we know it's linked
