This episode is for Sienna Wearsma, who wanted to hear a story about

Irena Sennler. Hey Sienna, this one's for you.

In past episodes, I have told you many stories centered

in the time period of World War II. I've told you about the evil,

nasty, hateful Nazi leader, Adolf Hitler. I have told you stories about how much he hated

the Jewish people in his own country and in the countries that he conquered and occupied

with his Nazi forces. Well, today's story is also set during this time period.

You know, once in a while you come across a story in history that just makes you stop and think

really deeply about life. This is one of those stories. The story of Irena Sennler,

and I'm pronouncing that in the German way of pronouncing Irena.

Irena in English is pronounced Irena, but because she was from Poland and they spoke Polish

in German, that is how they pronounce her name over there. So I'm going to pronounce it the way

she pronounced it. Irena, Irena Sennler. So her story really remained virtually unknown for

decades after it happened. We can actually think four high school girls from Kansas who researched

for a history project to uncover the truth of Irena's story. Since then movies have been made

and books have been written and plays have been performed, depicting the miraculous and heroic

acts of Irena Sennler's life. Irena was born in Poland on February 15, 1910. She was the only

child of a doctor and his dear wife. When Irena was very young, only seven years old, her father
