Theodore Roosevelt, sometimes referred to as Teddy, was born on October 27, 1858.

His family was one of many families divided by the Civil War.

His father was a staunch supporter of Abraham Lincoln and preserving the Union.

While his mother was sympathetic to the Confederate cause.

Young Theodore's two uncles on his mother's side were in the Confederate Army and Navy,

and he grew up hearing tales of their heroic deeds.

Theodore had three siblings, two sisters and one brother.

His older sister was very much like a mother to Teddy and was known to be very protective of him.
