The word heresy is closely associated with the idea of schism, breaking off from the church.

In fact, early in the Christian church, the two words, heresy and schism, were almost indistinguishable.

But as time progressed, the word came to refer primarily to a deviation from Orthodox doctrine. St.

Augustine distinguished between heretics and schismatics, stating that schismatics broke the unity

and charity of the church. Schismatics might believe what the rest of the church believes,

nevertheless they separate themselves due to sinful pride. Heretics, on the other hand,

are those who, quote, hold false opinions

regarding God and do injury to the faith itself. Later theologians distinguish between

formal and material heresy. Formal heresy is a stubborn denial of vital Christian doctrine. Formal

heretics are people who have heard the truth, and then they've rejected it. Material heresy is what happens when a person embraces a false doctrine out of ignorance.

I think as a Christian minister of the gospel that there are lots of people who are material heretics in the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ today.

People who embrace false doctrines without even knowing better.
