an author one day. It just seemed too unrealistic. And then when I was 19 years old, I was injured.

I was a competitive athlete. And I was injured. And I ended up writing my first novel at the age of 19, and then a second novel at the age of 22, and neither of those was ever published. I don't even have them anymore, and no one will ever read them. A co-wrote a book with a friend when I was 25, and even then I didn't think I could make a career of it and then when I was 28 I sat down and wrote the notebook and you know I had good fortune of course with that what is officially my first novel and yet when I about it, and I tell that story, I always remember to make sure to add that, yes, it was my first novel. But I had written two complete unpublished novels and co-written another book before I sat down to write the notebook. So it wasn't as if I sat down one day and typed it out and here I am. It's amazing because I saw that you worked for a pharmaceutical. You were an insurance broker. You did all sorts of things and I think that one is young. you feel that you are bound to do what you're doing today or that you're bound to do what people told you that you should be doing or whatever you feel that you're good at. And then you put aside your true passion. And especially when you know you've been writing one novel and then another and not being successful, it is very easy to succumb to that pressure and to just believe, well, maybe I'm not good at this or maybe I just, you know, daydreaming and I just should give this up. But you didn't. I didn't. And when it came time to the notebook, I was even at that point. I was willing to give myself three chances. And I would think I would have been okay, right? Y en eso cuando saqué de notebook, pues ya vean lo que pasó con esa película que fue un exitazo, les digo que ha vendido más de 100 millones de libros en todo el mundo. Y pues es uno de los escritores de novelas de romance. pues más importantes en este momento a nivel mundial.

And so I've been watching it and it's a story of a romantic novel writer actually. You must watch it and everything she goes through in this utopian world and whatever. But I was thinking this week and when I was watching that series and I know I was going to interview you, I have no idea how do you write these novels full of love but also with profound and and painful messages. Like, where does that come from inside you?

It's interesting the novels that I tend to enjoy the most and remember the longest and also the films I tend to enjoy the most and remember the longest. And also the films I tend to enjoy the most

and remember the longest are those in which I moved through the major emotions of life. life. And so I include love and sadness, but also anger and confusion or infatuation or attraction. I try to include all of these emotions of life. I think because I enjoy that in a good story. And I think it's what makes a great story memorable. With that said, you know, I had good parents growing up, right? And I was raised in a good family and and I guess, you know, by the time I became a writer I had no hang-ups about expressing such emotions or or or even struggles with doing so. Ya, le digo que cómo escogé ese género de la novela, motiva, romántica, amorosa y yo no sé si ustedes ya vieron pluribús pero justamente se trata de una escritora de novelas de amor y dice mira la verdad es que yo siempre he pensado que las películas o los libros que más he recordado que más me han conmovido son los que tienen todo el rango de las emociones desde desesperanza amor por enganche tristeza, o sea, como todo el espectro emocional y que él viene de una familia bastante funcional con dos muy buenos padres en donde siempre tuvo la oportunidad de expresar sus emociones por lo cual escribir ese tipo de novelas ha sido muy cómodo. Pero les una cosa cosa bien interesante de Nicolás Parks, que por ejemplo en el libro A Walk to Remember es un libro que ha acompañado a muchos lectores en procesos de duelo, justamente lo que hablábamos el día de ayer, de no porque ahora remain del cual vamos a hablar en unos momentos, pues sí hay un sentido también responsabilidad emocional cuando sabes que alguien te está leyendo sobre el dolor. the notebook, or even remain, when you know that a lot of people reading those books are going through their own processes of loss and the impact that your words in that book will have in that person's heart and mind. Certainly, right?

I... I... I... I try to write a novel that I think all my readers will enjoy. And so if there's a scene that's particularly sad, I try not to go overboard with it. I to let the reader fill in the blanks and perhaps draw from their own experience to amplify the emotion that I was hoping to create. And that works. That has seemed to work really well. And it's interesting to me that when I talk to readers or I get letters from readers, most often I get letters from people who love a particular book because they're going through something similar in their own life. When the notebook, I get a lot of letters from families whose parents are grandparents. Till this day, till this day. Till this day, who are going through Alzheimer's. And when I, when someone references a walk to remember, they talk about a friend who died of cancer when they were young or a Sister who died or someone that they cared about who died or you know if I'm writing about the last song That was the film with Miley Cyrus got a lot of letters from young ladies who you know Maybe had a string in relationship with their dad, but it gave them the desire to perhaps improve that relationship again. So the theme of whatever book seems, if it's particularly resonant in your life, it seems to end up often becoming that reader's favorite book because they're going through whatever... vida, se tendrá a estar en una vida que es la favorita de la vida, porque estánendo en la vida de todas las características.
