Summary

Still confused about what an NFT (non-fungible token) is and how to buy or sell one? Curious about how the Metaverse applies to beauty? On this Naked Beauty minisode, Beauty reporter Darian Harvin and I dive into these technologies and how they could influence the future of beauty culture. We question whether the Metaverse should be aspirational or realistic, discuss how Darian sold her first NFT(which was created in celebration of Black women), and reflect on what role diversity will play within these technologies. Enjoy!

Welcome back for another episode. Today's episode is a little bit different because we were talking

0:18.0

about NFTs and the Metaverse. If you heard last week's conversation with my favorite beauty journalist,

0:24.5

Darian Simone Harvin, who is always at the absolute forefront of culture, we talked about

0:29.2

how the media landscape is changing, but we also had a conversation about NFTs and the Metaverse,

0:34.8

and I wanted to isolate a snippet of that conversation to do a standalone episode on this topic.

0:40.0

And if you guys are interested, I'm actually going to have more conversations with people that work

0:43.8

in tech about beauty and tech's impacts on beauty because I do think it's very interesting and I

0:48.4

think it's important that we as beauty lovers and as a beauty community understand the space and

0:53.5

how it's going to just change our relationship with beauty. Darian happens to be the only person

1:00.8

that I know, IRL, that has sold an NFT, so we hear about her experience selling that NFT,

1:07.1

what she sold, why she sold it, what her experience was putting that up for auction,

1:11.6

and I just love to see young black women being early adopters of new technology.

1:16.8

I also just want to cover before we get into the conversation a few basic definitions.

1:20.8

So NFT stands for non-fungible token. Non-fungible means that it's unique and it can't be

1:27.6

replaced with something else. So an NFT can be anything digital, it can be a drawing,

1:32.9

it can be music, it can be a gift, it could be a podcast episode. Someone recently paid like

1:38.8

$400,000 for a 50 second video that Grimes released. You guys know Grimes, she's a musician,

1:44.7

famously married and now divorced from Elon Musk, but most NFT sellers are actually people you

1:51.2

haven't heard of, or at least I hadn't heard of, they're not household names, people, crypto punks,

1:56.9

these are terms that if you're in the NFT space, you're very familiar with these names. So people
