We go immediately to Quito, Ecuador, where there's a decision has been made that President

Lassa will not stand for re-election, and it is suggested, it is reported that his party

will not bring forth a candidate for re-election, for election.

The election is imminent.

This is a troubled country, a troubled governance, and at the same time, there's a specter named

Marena, a former president who's under corruption charges, but seems to be wielding a strong hand.

To what end, professor, what is Marena?

Well, I'm sorry, I used the term, too many terms here, professor, Corea, the previous

president who's under corruption charges.

Yes, Rafael Corea, who was the previous president from 2006, had deceited power to his

vice president, Lenin Moreno, who basically turned against him and created the opportunity,

actually, for elections in which the current president, Guillermo Lassa, came to power.

But so, as one of Latin American's more radical leftists, Rafael Corea had long been in

the background looking for an opportunity to return to power.

And so now that the current president trying to avoid corruption charges against him, with

force to essentially dissolve Congress and call for new elections, which are going to be

on August 20th for the first round.

Although Corea himself, who is under corruption charges, will not be running, the likely candidates

for his faction, Andreas Raos, who ran and was defeated previously, and also another

Corea acolyte won by the name of Luis Gonzales, appears that will be running.
