The big election in Europe these last days was in Spain where there's a tie and the likelihood

because no one party commands the majority is that there will be a follow-on election, very straightforward parliamentary politics.

In Latin America, the mother country is not inspiring similar stability because after the first round of elections

we have a lot of debate and right now in Guatemala there's something more than debate.

And I welcome the professor to help me follow this extremely fast-changing story.

The first round delivered two candidates, one expected. Her name is Sandra Torres.

She's the wife of a former president, so the elite of Guatemala City.

This is well to do families all knowing each other.

The surprise was a man named Aravalo who represents a new party, Semina.

And he speaks, I can outsider, protesting corruption, talking about how he'll clean things up and reform.

Now what is striking is the big winner in the first round was none of the above.

The spur ballots or people refusing to vote at all for the two leading candidates

and voting for their rejection of the process and their choices.

You will remember that the leading candidate in the polls some time ago was removed by order of the courts.

So what we're looking at is a process that wasn't comfortable as it started the first round.
