The election in Guatemala is concluded. The winner is a man named Bernardo Aravalo.

He represents a party, however, that's under challenge as having registered with an

fraudulent registration and have been illegitimate at the time of the vote.

This is led to this report. Guatemala and President-elect Bernardo Aravalo

has temporarily suspended his participation in the government transition.

He said in a news conference, as actions by authorities fueled doubts around the transfer of power.

Professor Ui identified this as a possible large story having to do with the opposition being

disappointed that an outsider, a man who I believe is the son of a former president,

so he's quite much involved in government thinking all his life. But in any event,

this now looks to be a disruption. At this point, is there a way of resolving this so that the

transition can go forward? Are we looking at unpredictable events?

Well, I do believe the transition will go forward eventually, John. And there's some question

of what degree Aravalo is judging correctly the amount of international support and any

amount of support that he has within the Guatemalan system, but people who are frustrated with

the established economic and political elites trying to rig the game to keep things working

their way, or to what degree he is overplaying his hand. But certainly what happened recently was

the opposition of the established going too far. There was basically an opening of ballot boxes,
