Summary

On the morning of April 24th, 1891, the body of a mutilated woman is found in a New York hotel room. Bowery area of Manhattan, knocked on the door of Room 31.

Given the occupants a few moments to respond, he then knocked again.

Still, not a stir was heard within the room.

Rocking louder still, he waited, and waited.

Annoyed and also concerned, since the key to the room had never been returned,

he finally broke the door open.

Instead of finding the empty room he expected, he found something far worse.

The room was still occupied but not by the living. On the bed lay a lifeless woman in a pool of blood. Her clothing had been wrapped and twisted around her head, obscuring her face.

Her abdomen cut open, she was disemboweled, and next to her lay a bloody sharpened table knife, and the man she checked in with, the man who checked in as her husband, was nowhere to be found.
