Summary

For decades Yoga Alliance has been the main credentialing body for yoga teachers and schools. But the organization has been widely criticized for being nothing more than a list service that teachers feel required to pay for. Over the past few years, the leadership at Yoga Alliance has changed and current CEO, Shannon Roche, is my guest this week. My goal for this interview was to get a full picture of what the goals are within the organization right now, how they plan to provide real value to yoga teachers and schools, how they are addressing sexual misconduct and ethical violations, as well as the outcomes of their most recent major project -- The Standards Review Project. Shannon also took the time to answer listener-submitted questions.

0:18.8

what Yoga Alliance is and you probably also know that they've been undergoing a lot of changes in the past several years.

0:26.0

So Shannon has been a big part of these changes. She's been with the organization since 2017, and they end up with the organization since 2017 and they announced new standards for

0:37.8

yoga schools and yoga teachers this past summer. So I thought it would be a

0:41.6

great opportunity to talk to Shannon

0:43.7

to have them give us an update on where they are and where things are going. I

0:50.5

asked for questions from listeners on Instagram. I saved your questions for the end but I tried to go through as many questions as possible with her and I'll also just be transparent and say that because I'm not a yoga teacher myself, I haven't really followed

1:06.4

all of the ins and outs and little details and controversies and podcasts about Yoga Alliance over the years.

1:14.0

So I really tried to educate myself in terms of

1:18.0

what was happening and then what they're hoping to

1:22.0

instill and change within the organization.

1:26.0

So that's just my way of saying I hope this conversation is of service to you and

1:32.0

if you have any other questions feel free to submit them on

1:37.2

Instagram or you can send them to support adjacent yoga.com. Enjoy the conversation with Shannon.

1:44.2

So Shannon, thanks so much for being here.

1:46.4

I'm looking forward to talking to you today.

1:50.0

And I want to just dive right in, you know, I interviewed David, Lipsius, last year for Yoga Journal,

1:58.0

so I got to know a little bit about what was happening at Yoga Alliance and I know there's been a lot of changes in staff and I know there's been a lot of committees formed and focus groups and outcomes and analysis.

2:10.0

So this is kind of our opportunity to talk through everything and where Yoga Alliance is right now and how it is trying to serve the yoga community.

2:19.6

I'm going to dive into sort of like the hard stuff right away and that is to say

2:24.8

Yoga Alliance has been really criticized in the past and I mean I think still is to a
