From the opinion pages of the Wall Street Journal, this is Potomac Watch. Texas enacts a new law allowing police to arrest migrants who cross the US-Mexico border

illegally and also giving local judges the authority to order them to leave the

country. Welcome to Potomac Watch. I'm Kim Strossle. I am joined today

by my fabulous colleague and fellow columnist

Alicia Finley. Alicia we're both from the West a lot of problems out there that are

unique to that part of the country and let's start with the border and Texas has moved this

week. Situation at the border is obviously continuing to spiral out of control.

The Senate went home this week without any breakthroughs on a deal to trade Ukraine funding for changes in

border policy and amid all this Texas which has of course borne a lot of the

brunt of the Biden administration's failure on the border decided to act.

Governor Greg Abbott signed a law, a new statute that lets Texas law enforcement officers arrest

people who are suspected of entering the country illegally. Once in custody, migrants can either agree to Texas judge's order

to leave the US or be prosecuted on misdemeanor charges.
