Happy Friday everyone from NPR Music and all songs considered. I'm Robin Hilton. I'm here with

0:04.4

contributor Gavin Gottrie, hey Gavin. What's going on Robin? It's new music Friday that day of

0:09.7

the week when most new albums and EPs come out. We go through a great big pile of them and pick

0:14.9

the best ones that you should hear now. On this episode we've got a new joint release from Sufjan

0:19.8

Stevens and Angelo to Augustine. A video game soundtrack from Japanese Breakfast plus new ones

0:25.6

from the rapper Carrie Foe, Country Singer, Mickey Guidon and more. But we start with the singer

0:31.3

Anthony Hamilton. His new album out today is called Love Is The New Black.

1:01.3

Love is The New Black. You will come. You will come.

1:31.7

This is Anthony Hamilton. His new album is Love Is The New Black. This is the title cut from it. He's a

1:51.8

soul and R&B singer who's been putting out records for like 25 years now. And on this album,

1:58.0

Gavin at times he really channels classic singers like Marvin Gaye or I was thinking Bill Withers.

2:04.4

Other tracks like The Drum Machines Kick In and the Steam starts to rise. He kind of lives in both

2:13.0

that sort of classic sound of the past and then also in more contemporary worlds on this record.

2:18.5

Definitely. I was listening to this and my first thought was like man, coughing season must be

2:23.5

close. This is like a proper honest R&B album. For all those reasons, he said it feels like those

2:32.0

days of old, those kind of 60 soul singers and there's often a lot of soul samples throughout the

2:37.0

album. Different producers from Germain DePri and Nath Wunder and Bink, these guys are using soul

2:43.6

samples. So it feels like a throwback but then like you said, it's got Lil John on here and Rick

2:49.4

Ross. There's like that bounce to it too. So I think it's all those things that R&B can be. But

2:55.3

I've always loved Anthony Hamilton because if R&B has rhythm and blues, he's always kind of been

2:59.8

on the blue side of things for me with his honesty. Lurically, there are a lot of the songs about

3:05.5

heartbreak that maybe you'd expect but he also touches on some bigger issues like he talks about
