We live in a time when too many Americans disdain American heroes and legends.

They treat America as though America was filled only with victims and victimizers.

Well, that's not true.

There are stories, and then there are legends.

I'm here to discuss seven legends about seven courageous men.

overcame nearly insurmountable odds and made huge sacrifices without the promise of fame and glory.

One such man was Ernest E. Evans, a World War II naval officer

who fought in the Battle of Sumar. In the battle, a small U.S. naval task unit was ambushed by a large

Japanese fleet of 23 ships, hell-bent on destroying the American Navy. Though almost completely unprepared,

Evans and his men managed to attack the Japanese forces in one of the greatest last stands in naval

history and in the face of almost certain death. Or take Frank Luke, a 21-year-old fighter pilot in World War I.

Young, talented, arrogant, Luke sometimes butted head with his peers and commanding officers,

especially when he disregarded direct orders and occasionally tended to fly solo. But he secured

his spot in history after shooting down 18 German aircraft in 18 days.

Now, two Air Force bases boast his name.
