1:52.0 | So no matter how many times you've done a certain activity, bend to a particular place or seen something, approaching it in the present moment as if you've never done it before. |
2:04.0 | But oftentimes we do the complete opposite. We base our present moment experiences on how things happened in the past. |
2:12.0 | And essentially what we're doing is setting ourselves up for expectations and usually with expectations comes disappointment and judgment which can lead to increased levels of stress. |
2:26.0 | This is actually what happened to me when I first started meditating. I would base each meditation session on how previous sessions went. |
2:36.0 | So let's say my Monday morning meditation was quote unquote great meaning I was able to maintain my posture. I was able to focus on my breath and my mind didn't get distracted as much. |
2:48.0 | For my evening meditation, I wasn't able to let go of my morning sessions experience. And I started my evening session with the expectations of it going as quote unquote well as my morning session. |
3:04.0 | But what often happened is that my mind would be racing during my evening meditation going over all of my day's experiences. |
3:14.0 | But I would then judge myself for not having as quote unquote good meditation session as I did in the morning. |
3:23.0 | And so that was my pattern when I first started meditating. I eventually shifted into the space of beginner's mind approaching each meditation as if I had never experienced that meditation before because essentially I had it. |
