What is going on everybody? Welcome back to the Mind Over Macros Podcast and as always I'm

0:09.0

your host Mike Milner and today we are going to continue with the neurotransmitter series and we're going to be talking about

0:17.2

glutamate which I think is such a fascinating neurotransmitter. it is responsible for emotions and is also responsible

0:26.8

for our memory.

0:28.1

So I like to think of glutamate as the emotional amplifier. So what that means is that if glutamate is high,

0:35.0

if levels are high and let's say you are feeling happy,

0:39.0

then you are going to feel very happy.

0:42.0

And if you are feeling sad, you are going to feel very happy and if you are feeling sad you're going to feel

0:44.9

very sad so those with high levels of glutamate tend to be very emotional because

0:51.6

again it's our emotional amplifier and it also plays a

0:55.7

role in memory so it's not the type of thing where we want glutamate to be too

1:00.2

low because if that happens then we're going to have issues with retaining

1:04.8

information and feel like you know brain fog or just not feel like ourselves and

1:10.0

we don't want that so you know it's kind of like the Goldilocks situation

1:14.3

where too much is not right and too little is not right

1:17.8

and we just want that middle ideal level

1:21.8

when it comes to glutamate. And the reason why I think that it's such a fascinating

1:26.1

Neurotransmitter is because it has been used as a food additive for a long time so many of you have probably heard of MSG, which is basically just a easily convertible form of glutamate. And that has been used in fast foods, commercial coffees, frozen meals, that sort of thing to,

1:49.0

you know, and really it's kind of messed up if you think about it but it's like playing on our

1:53.8

brain chemistry to get us to enjoy that food more so if you think about like a

1:58.7

fast food just like a burger and it has MSG in it. Well that emotional response, that pleasure response that

2:07.4

you're going to get from the food is now going to be amplified because of the higher
