Summary

After the wall of Jerusalem was rebuilt, the people gathered to hear God’s Word and were cut to the core by how far they had strayed. They were first called to rejoice—because the joy of the Lord is their strength—then returned in fasting and confession, remembering God’s faithfulness and recommitting their lives to Him. This was true revival: more than rebuilding walls, it was rebuilding hearts—because you become what you worship.

This is a chapter that is near and dear to my heart for a couple of reasons.

0:31.1

Reason number one is I remember when I first read it and I thought, that's what I want to do.

pastors conferences and one of our starting texts is Nehemiah chapter 8 for that first reason. So

I love to see this become a model for others. Over in Scotland in Glasgow, they, and I've told you this before over

1:13.8

the years, but they have a motto. When I first went there, I was surprised because it seemed like a

rough city. And somebody was there who's a native telling me the history of that town, that the city

motto of Glasgow, Scotland was once,

um, uh, let Glasgow flourish by the praising of his name and by the preaching of his word.

1:38.5

That was the city motto. It's a great motto for any city. Let Glasgow flourish by the praising of his name and the preaching of

1:45.9

his word. Over time, as society would have it, the town became more and more secular and less and

1:57.6

less Christ-oriented, and they thought it was too religious to have

2:02.0

praising of his name and preaching of his words. So they dropped the whole last part,

2:08.0

and it just said, let Glasgow flourish. But there was no explanation given as to the route to that flourishing, which was the praising of his name and the preaching of his word.

2:24.3

It was just sort of a nice, warm sentiment, let Glasgow flourish.

2:28.3

Since then, they have abandoned the entire motto and the modern city council's come up with something
