Summary

Ever wondered why conversations between men and women sometimes feel like two different languages? Discover the fascinating world of cross-cultural communication right in your own relationships. Based on years of linguistic study, I explain why men often jump into problem-solving mode while women prefer talking things through. We’ll explore how seemingly trivial tag questions like "don't you think?" can either signal a lack of confidence or be a brilliant tool for engaging dialogue. And...

Years ago when I was studying linguistics, one of the many thought leaders on the subject

0:19.8

said that communication between men and women is actually what he deemed cross-cultural communication.

0:28.0

I thought that was very interesting for context or for an example, what he meant by that was when a woman is speaking,

0:39.3

perhaps she's complaining.

0:41.2

A man typically wants to go straight in and solve the problem. Whereas the woman just

0:46.2

wants to talk it out, the process typically the thinking through comes from the

0:50.9

speaking and we don't want solutions. Maybe at all or definitely at least not right away, but the male inclination is to swoop on in and problem solve.

1:02.0

Also when a man is speaking the research suggested that when a

1:06.8

woman is just nodding showing that she's listening the man assumes that

1:11.9

she's agreeing with him. So for example if a man is saying

1:15.5

something like the car sucks this is wrong that's wrong and the woman's

1:20.0

nodding along he's thinking oh so you agree with me that we need a new car.

1:25.0

And he might be shocked when the woman says, no, I never said that.

1:29.7

Hence the cross-cultural communication, we just communicate differently. But one thing that stood out in this

1:38.4

linguistics essay was the tag question. I'm going to explain what that is in a second.

1:44.4

But there are two very different arguments about what the tag question means and

1:50.9

linguists debate over this. I love a good debate, especially over anything to do with language.

1:57.3

So a tag question is is as follows. It's as if I say to you, I think that's the right color, don't you?

2:05.0

That decision we made last year to XYZ was correct, wasn't it?

2:12.0

I think we should move forward in the second quarter with this choice.

2:17.0

Wouldn't you agree?
