The truth is that sharks are actually far less deadly statistically than crocodiles,

hippos, snakes, spiders or even mosquitoes.

And yet, they feature more than any other animal in horror films.

In fact, it's probably likely that sharks are some of the most ubiquitous monsters in all

Ever since Jaws, audiences have been fascinated and terrified by the idea of sharks lurking under the water waiting to attack us.

And filmmakers have constantly tried to tap into that fear.

In 2010, Australian film director Andrew Trowke made The Reef, a truly terrifying movie based on a true story about

a great white shark hunting the crew of a capsized sailboat in the Great Barrier Reef.

In 2017, Johannes Roberts made a similar film, a survival thriller about two women trapped

underwater 47 meters below sea level and hunted by deadly sharks.

Both films achieved huge financial success, proving that sharks continue to be some of the

most bankable monsters in horror.
