I'm John Batchel with my colleague, Anatole Levin of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.

NATO.

Right now, NATO is a question mark into the future.

There are decisions being made and there are, and the remarks are in the news,

so I'll stay with those.

For example, the Chancellor to B of Germany, Friedrich Merrittz, has indicated that he'll go

along with an idea to avoid the debt break and spend perhaps a trillion dollars on infrastructure and defense building over

these next years of his chancellorship and beyond. That is extraordinary for Germany to come forward

to commit to that. It tells everyone in Europe spend money because we need a defense industry

and Germany is taking the lead. There's another example going in another direction.

The leadership in Warsaw, Poland, is inquiring about a nuclear weapon that it can buy.

It takes too long to develop it internally.

They want to buy nuclear weapons pointing to Belarus.

Hey, they've got nukes deployed over there and nobody objected

when Russia did it. So why are you objecting when we want them? There you have it, Anatole,

two parts of what used to be NATO. Poland wants nukes and Germany wants to lead by re-industrializing

the defense base. Which way are they going to go?

Well, I mean, I certainly think that there is going to be European rearmament,

but, you know, they can't do that very quickly because, you know, their base has decayed to such an extent.

So this will be a long-term project.

And, you know, the real question is what else will be cut?
