Nancy Pelosi, who put her stamp on Washington as a progressive policymaker who also mastered pragmatic politics and became the first woman speaker in American history, formally

stepping down from leadership and on her own terms.

It's a long road and arise from back in 1987

when she first won a San Francisco seat in a special election.

I thank my colleague for calling the special order

and giving me the opportunity to speak on the House of Representatives

about an issue of concern to the people of my district and the people

throughout the world who care about human rights.

The speaker has played a big role in American life.

Meanwhile, a longtime ally, President Biden dubbed her the most consequential speaker in history,

as do many who work with her.

It was a very historic speech for a historic woman.

Republicans did like to draft Nancy Pelosi.

I think that she is a tremendous leader.

I think Nancy Pelosi, when the history is written, will go down as one of the most effective
