Welcome to The Beat. I am Katie Fang in for Ari Melburgh this evening. You've been watching a briefing from officials in Colorado Springs on that horrific shooting at an LGBT nightclub. Officials announcing the names and the pronouns of the dead and hailing the heroes who stopped the gunmen. Here's the background, as it played out this weekend,

a gunman storming a gay nightclub,

immediately opening fire,

murdering five people and leaving at least 19 injured.

The district attorney talked about the charging process.

We will hold people accountable as we identify what charges should be filed in this case.

It's imperative to note that the investigation continues and will likely last for some time.

The alleged shooter was arrested on murder and hate crime charges for the incident.

The 22-year-old gunman was stopped by two heroes helping take the shooter down.

The New York Times just talked to one of them, an Army veteran who says he went into combat mode to disarm the gunman,

and described charging through the chaos at the club,

tackling the gunman and beating him bloody with the gunman's own gun.

Survivors of the massacre describing the harrowing scene.

I saw bodies on the floor.

Blood, shattered glass, broken cups.

People covered up in white sheets.

People trying to be resuscitated and worked on.

I went outside and there was more bodies, more sheets.

People standing around crying looking for their loved ones.

It was very traumatic.
