Summary

It's 150 years since Darwin's theory of Evolution was presented to the Linnean Society, and so we've Naturally Selected the Science of Evolution! We find out why scientists have revisited a textbook example of natural selection in action, find out why horny sheep are gambling on good weather and how bacteria in the lab can evolve into a new species! We find out why tragedy almost kept Darwin's ideas from ever being seen, by looking at the archives of his own letters. Plus, why crocodiles chat from inside their eggs, a new way to send messages underwater and why Martian soil would be good... Like this podcast? Please help us by supporting the Naked Scientists

Hi Dave.

0:16.7

Hi there.

0:17.7

This week sees the 150th anniversary of Charles Darwin presenting his theories to the

0:21.9

Lenayan Society, so we're looking at the science of evolution.

0:26.0

We'll be finding out why scientists have revisited a textbook example of evolution in action,

0:31.0

and we'll be discovering why being the horniest sheep may not be best.

0:35.0

Plus we'll be looking at Darwin's own letters to get a behind the scenes look at the man himself,

0:40.0

and we'll also be finding out why bacteria evolved in the lab can out-compete their parents.

0:45.0

So they actually grow close to twice as fast as did the ancestor.

0:50.2

So when you compete them, the evolved bacteria kick butt.

Now, Dr. Chris isn't with us this week, as his own experiment in genetic recombination,

1:00.0

that's mixing his DNA with that of his wife Sarah has been a success and they are now the

1:04.9

proud parents of a little boy Timothy a brother to their daughter Amelia.

1:08.8

So congratulations Sarah and Chris from all of us here at the naked scientists.

1:13.0

Indeed, but even in Chris's absence will be catching up on the latest science news,

1:17.0

including why ancient poets may have been astronomically accurate and a new way to communicate underwater.

1:22.0

And Diana O' Carroll will be joining us with this colourful question of the week.

1:27.0

Why is copper the metal, copper in colour,

1:30.0

when in solution with copper sulfate it's blue and copper carbonate it's colored and when you do a flame

test is actually green.
