Okinawa is important for American history because that was one of the last challenges

the US Army and Marine Corps took on before the war ended and the

fighting on Okinawa was a larger version of the fighting on Iwo Jima in which the Japanese army meant to sacrifice itself to protect the homeland, the emperor,

and to wear the Americans down so that they negotiated.

It didn't happen, but Okinawa was especially fierce
