Summary

Nostradamus has predicted every major disaster in history — or so the internet would have you believe. Peter and Afua get behind the myth to meet the real man: a plague-era apothecary, rejected by the medical establishment, whose greatest invention wasn't prophecy — it was selling certainty to an anxious world.

Today we're going to be talking about a man whose name has become synonymous with his ability

0:04.8

to see the future. If a major catastrophic global event happens, you can pretty much bet that

0:10.3

within 24 hours, someone on the internet will claim that this guy predicted it hundreds of years

0:15.4

ago. We're talking about major events like the Great Fire of London, the rise of Adolf Hitler, the assassination

0:22.2

of JFK, the September 11th attacks on the US. According to this man's believers, he forsaw

0:29.5

it all. He is the ultimate historic conspiracy theorist dream. The 16th century French astrologer, philosopher, physician, and reputed

0:41.7

seer, Michel de Nostradarmes, better known to us all as Nostradamus. He became huge effort in the

So he is one of those people who's suddenly gone and got a cult following a few hundred years later.

1:02.2

So I don't know whether Notre Dame is playing a role when you were growing up,

1:05.1

but he's popped up as being the only guy who can see the future from the past.

1:09.7

I don't know whether he has a resonance

1:11.2

in your childhood adolescence or beyond. Well, he's always just been there. What I didn't

1:18.0

realize until we started researching for this was that that hasn't always been the case. He was a

1:22.9

big deal in his lifetime, not uncontroversial. But you're right, it's this age of anxiety and uncertainty

1:29.1

that seems to have given him new life. And he wasn't just staring into crystal balls. He was

1:34.9

a medical professional navigating one of the most dangerous periods in European history.

1:40.9

Never trust someone who's a doctor who hasn't got a PhD in the humanities as well.

1:44.9

That's what I like to think.

1:46.2

But behind the myth of this mystical prophet is a man who's deeply embedded in the very real,

1:51.8

also terrifying realities of the racons.

1:54.3

He wasn't just staring at crystal balls.
