And today we're taking a look at some of the spooky and controversial mysteries at the Vatican.

But first, I thought we could share some interesting, maybe unknown fun facts about this mysterious place.

Since 1929, it's been its own country. Granted, it's the smallest country in the world covering just 100 acres and not even 900 residents call it home.

But it is home to one of the greatest libraries, art and history of any location on the planet.

The Vatican minced its own euros, printed its own stamps, issues, passports and license plates, operates media outlets and has its own flag and anthem.

They even have their own football team and military called the Swiss Guard of highly trained soldiers who are expert marksmen. And yes, they are all from Switzerland.

And get this Deb, did you know this all their ATM machines are in Latin?

Oh, they, you know what, I have to tell you Samantha, I took four years of Latin and I can conjugate the verb to love.

That's it. That's more than me. I'd be standing there in the Basilica going, oh, I need $20 to get this statue of Mary. And I wouldn't be able to get it out of the ATM.

Why is it called the Vatican? Well, we don't really know. During the Roman Empire, it was known as the Vatican field.

Its name may have derived from the Latin verb Vatican or which means to prophecy or for tell, leading many to believe this is the area where prophets or the Suisseurs, Vatets and Latin would issue their prophecies.

Some believe the land was named for the God of childbirth, Vaticanus, who opened the mouths of newborns and whose voice was heard on Vatican Hill.

Now in St. Peter's Square, you'll find a 350 ton obelisk, made from a single piece of red granite.

It was stolen by the Roman Emperor, Caligula, but was made for a Pharaoh more than 3000 years ago. And it is stood in St. Peter's Square since 1586.

Hidden beneath the Vatican is the Necropolis. Five stories below St. Peter's Basilica lies a city of the dead.

It's an intensive network of underground caves, catacombs and mausoleums that many believe holds the body of St. Peter.

And get this, hidden beneath the Basilica and the Vatican Square is an enormous chariot racing track that dates back to the reigns of Nero and Caligula.

If you go inside St. Peter's Basilica and a chapel on the right, you'll find Michelangelo's famous sculpture of the Virgin Mary,

credling Jesus' lifeless body after the crucifixion.

Look more closely and you'll see Michelangelo's name carved under Mary's sash. It's the famous artist only autographed work that exists.
