Summary

Patience is a bit of a lost art, but it’s something that ‘Birdgirl’ Mya-Rose Craig is well practiced in. Mya-Rose is an ornithologist, an environmentalist, a diversity activist as well as a writer, speaker and broadcaster. Having been a twitcher – someone who travels to specific locations to spot birds – since she was days old, she revels in patiently waiting to see the next beautiful bird on her list.

In this chat, Fearne and Mya-Rose talk about the connection between nature and mental health, as well as how activities that get you outside are vital in making and maintaining relationships with loved ones through sharing a lived experience rather than a digital one.

Mya-Rose’s book, Birdgirl, is out now.

Hello, I'm Fern Cotton and this is Happy Place, the show that whisks you away to a

0:05.4

calmer place. Today I'm chatting to Maya Rose Craig.

0:09.7

You have all these things coming up about how good nature is for your mental health,

0:12.8

and I think part of that is kind of it follows its own rules. It isn't part of

0:17.4

you know the internet or consumption or you know the cities that we've sort of

0:21.2

built for ourselves, it's just its own thing. And I think that's one of the

0:24.8

reasons why it is so refreshing and I think for me like I've always been

0:28.4

terrible at like mindfulness and meditation and things like that. But like for

0:32.8

me going on a walk out in the country somewhere that is my version of like

0:36.9

mindfulness. Maya Rose is an ornithologist and environmentalist, a diversity

0:42.0

activist, as well as a writer, speaker and broadcaster. Oh and she's only 20

0:47.7

years old. Oh my goodness she is incredible, she's completely astounding. She's

0:52.8

been a twitcher that's someone who travels to specific locations to spot birds

0:57.2

since she was literally a few days old. She goes by bird girl because there is

1:03.1

nothing and I mean nothing this young woman doesn't know about birds and

1:07.8

about their environments. She's written the most beautiful book also called

1:12.6

bird girl but interestingly it's about so much more than birds as is this

1:17.6

gorgeous chat I had with her. It's about adventure, it's about the relationship

1:21.7

between nature and mental health and it's about encouraging patients. Maya

1:26.8

Rose often has had to wait days, weeks, years in some cases to spot a particular

1:32.6

bird and I think there's a lot we can all learn from that about slowing our

1:36.4

lives down a bit. This episode of Happy Place is brought to you by Dyson and
