Film critic Roger Ebert was once asked if he could name a movie entirely devoid of cliches.

After thinking for a moment, he answered my dinner with Andre.

The Andre in the title of that film is the acclaimed actor, writer and theater director

Andre Gregory, and indeed, there's nothing conventional about him.

After all, this is the man who made a two-hour film about two men talking in a restaurant,

and once had a chemist create the stench of decaying flesh for a theater production of his,

and even his new memoir is unconventional with the title like this is not my memoir.

So today, Andre Gregory joins me on the show to talk about his unusual life

from his Jewish father's possible collaboration with the Nazis and his mom's affair with Errol Flynn

to the 14-year rehearsal of his production of Ibsen's The Master Builder

and the time the local sheriff escorted him out of his own Repertory Theatre

and dumped him across the state line in the middle of nowhere.

We get into his longtime collaboration with actor writer Wallace Sean,
