Sometimes I forget myself.

I call it float.

It's a strange feeling I get where a sound, image, or even a thought sends me back to some moment in my life that is vaguely remembered, that

has a powerful gravity, a strong feeling, a sense of place and of being present. So much gravity

it makes me float from where I am into this memory. It almost feels like leaning back in a chair

and you're about to fall. I was at a restaurant

with my wife where I saw this man with his wife and two kids. I saw him lift his water up to his

face in a certain way. Movements of his hands, eyebrows. At first it was just a sense of familiarity, and then, float.

Vague memories of times with my brothers. The orange of the light as we played in the grass so vivid.

Lights reflecting on the lake and wonder about what was on the other side as if it were across the Atlantic.

Powerful feelings overtook me like waves.

What is it about this man and his family that stirred up these images?

What were these images anyway?

Where did they come from?

Because as far as I knew, I never had any brothers.

My wife must have sensed my disturbance because she touched me and asked me what was wrong.

I told her honestly that I felt the man sitting over there with his wife and two little girls

was my brother.

You don't have a brother, she said.

I know.

And yet I remember

in flashes and feelings
