Summary

Janet responds to three parents who are worried that their kids seem overly anxious and sensitive in social situations. Each parent has tried to be patient and trusting, but they wonder if their child's temperament may be abnormal, especially when compared to their peers. Aside from frustration and concern, one parent says: "I'm so lost... Sometimes I feel shame — not about him — but because I want to do fun things with him, but he always pulls back and retreats." Janet offers advice and a lot of encouragement.

Welcome to Unruffled.

Today I'm going to be, well, what I hope I'm going to be doing is encouraging you, especially if you have

0:23.8

a child who seems extra, maybe anxious, they're sensitive, they get overwhelmed.

0:32.7

Maybe it seems like they're different from their peers or other kids that you see.

And we worry, right? So that's

0:40.0

why I thought it might be helpful to share that several people have written to me about this

topic recently. While maybe this is a less common temperament or it seems to be a lot of children

have it. I relate to it, you know, where we're, maybe we're

0:56.8

a little awkward socially. Maybe it could be referred to as reserved, introverted, slow to warm,

1:05.2

shy, I guess, although I never love that term. Maybe because it was used about me by my parent in a disapproving way,

1:12.8

like telling people when I wouldn't say hello right away. She's shy, and I could tell that

1:18.9

that wasn't a welcome way to be. But is this a deficiency? Is this a problem? Is this something

1:27.2

we should be ashamed about? Absolutely

1:29.0

not, in my opinion, in my experience. Because really, children that have this, they can do just

1:36.7

fine when they're one-on-one with a friend, socializing in small doses or in ways where they feel

1:43.4

like they have some control over

1:45.0

the situation. But when it's kind of unmanageable and coming at them, it's unsettling and exhausting.

1:54.3

So anyway, like I said, I relate to this kind of temperament. And what I would like to help

these parents do is, well, they've all
