The Trump administration appears to be putting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau

on the chopping block, and the Federal Emergency Management Agency, or FEMA, may be next.

Elon Musk, who leads the Department of Government Efficiency or Doge, has been granted access

to the CFPB systems.

That's what a person familiar with the matter tells CNN.

Since then, the CFPB's acting director told employees to, quote,

Stand Down from All Work.

Two of the financial regulators' top officials resigned as a result.

The watchdog agency's job is to protect consumers

from financial abuses, and it's one of the main agencies that regulates banks. Fed Chair Jerome Powell

says that while the central bank has, quote, some jurisdiction to ensure big banks aren't cheating

consumers, without the CFPB, there's no other federal financial regulator in its place.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump brailed against FEMA on Truth Social and said it should be,

quote, terminated.

He accused FEMA of mismanaging disaster relief efforts.

Steve Bannon pleaded guilty to defrauding donors in a fundraising effort to build a wall along the U.S. southern border and a deal that allowed him to avoid prison.
