Mumps is a viral infection spread by respiratory droplets.

The incubation period is 14 to 25 days.

Perotid swelling on the side of the face usually lasts 5 to 7 days, but the other symptoms can persist for 10 days or more.

Management is supportive and involves treating the complications if they occur.

Taking a clear vaccination history is essential when you're considering a Mump's diagnosis.

The MMR vaccine offers around 80% protection against mumps.

Let's talk about the presentation.

Patients experience an initial period of flu-like symptoms, which are known as the

prodrome.

These symptoms occur a few days before the parotid swelling, and they involve

fever, muscle aches, lethargy, reduced appetite, headache and a dry mouth. Perotid gland swelling,

which can be either unilateral on one side of the face or bilateral on both sides of the face,

with associated pain in the protted gland, is the key presenting feature.

Mumps can also present with symptoms of complications, such as abdominal pain if they have pancreatitis, testicular pain and swelling if they

have oakitis, and confusion, neck stiffness and headache if there's meningitis or encephalitis.

Let's talk about management. An oral fluid swab for PCR testing is the key test for confirming the diagnosis.

It's also possible to test blood or saliva for antibodies to the mumps virus,

although interpretation can be difficult in people have had the vaccine.

Management is supportive with rest fluids and analgesia.
