Summary

We have 2 speakers from the North Oakland Open speaker meeting held in Oakland California, the meeting opens with Alex as the 10 min speaker, he is followed by Rena telling her story for the remainder of the time. Zoom About once a year I get an email asking me why in the podcast opening do I say that this "Is a podcast for men". I just got another and thought I might try to put this to rest, I am NOT saying that, I am saying "In a podcast format". When I listen to it nothing about it sounds like Im saying "for men" rather than "format" but apparently some of you hear "for men" I assure you the word is format! Hey everybody, I'm Alex, Alcoholic, Day 17, and I'm not a newcomer, I'm a retread, and

0:40.4

so to qualify, I have four DUIs spent 62 days in jail, drink every day for about 25 years,

0:51.4

except when I was in jail or pretty and other than that, I pretty much every night I would

0:56.9

get drunk. I started smoking weed when I was 12 too, so I have a marijuana addiction as

1:03.5

well. And so my most recent drink is March 23rd, 2015. That was the, I got my fourth DUI

1:17.4

earlier in that month, or actually was in February, and it's, it had already been AA, and it

1:26.0

would stick like, you know, a couple days at first, a couple weeks. Alcohol was definitely

1:32.6

a marijuana, my solution to dealing with feelings, problems, so without really changing,

1:41.1

I inevitably would just go back to drinking again, smoking weed too. I never even really

1:47.2

thought weed was a problem early on. And really it was like blown up relationships was

1:57.0

the worst thing for me, hurting other people, and just ended up alone. I'm definitely

2:04.2

a people person. I think I'm actually got probably code issues and other stuff there,

2:08.7

I'm liking that, that's a different meaning. So anyway, that March 23rd or that time, I,

2:18.6

100% knew alcohol was, was a problem. So I, you know, got back to, did 99, I actually

2:27.3

did more. I was not working, so I would go to like three meetings a day, or any time

2:33.1

I wasn't, you know, like anytime I wasn't working or didn't have something to do, I'd

2:39.8

be in a meeting. That kept me out of myself. It kept me from taking that first drink.

2:47.6

And so about three, four months into that, I was actually going to go see the grateful
