Welcome to meet the press now. I'm Kristen Welker on a very busy Tuesday, a day in which we could get a clearer picture of the midterm landscape nationally.

As voters head to the polls in New York, Florida, and Oklahoma will have much more on all of the races coming up.

But we do want to begin with new reporting on the recent search of Mar-Lago, what led up to it, what the FBI found,

and why the Justice Department took unprecedented action to search the home of a former president.

Overnight, the New York Times reporting that so far, the U.S. government has retrieved more than

300 classified documents from Mar-a-Lago. And according to newly disclosed correspondence between the National

Archives and the former president's lawyers, more than 700 classified documents were among

15 boxes of material turned over in January alone. That includes documents marked top-secret

compartmented information, the special category reserved for some of the nation's most important and most

sensitive secrets. That letter sheds light on why the apparent level of alarm was so high

inside the government about the amount of sensitive information that was being housed at Mar-a-Lago

in the run-up to the FBI search. Now, additionally, in court documents filed by Mr. Trump's team,

his lawyers have now confirmed the sequence of events leading up to that search, including being served a grand

jury subpoena for classified documents and a visit from top counterintelligence agents. In that

filing, Mr. Trump also asked to judge to appoint a special master to oversee the handling of documents that were seized.

We know from the search warrant documents that have been unsealed that FBI agents found nearly a dozen sets of material marked classified when they executed their warrant.
