Summary
Ms. Tina has been infusing bold and beautiful Texas style into global pop culture for decades. Sir John and I talked to Ms. Tina about her successful career as a stylist, her beauty regimen, building Cécred, and the significance of early exposure to images of Black beauty and power. We learned how she carries her mother's lessons about honoring creativity in yourself and your children. She told us about how her decision to enter beauty school in her 30s led her to build Headliners, a successful salon that cultivated beauty in Houston’s most powerful women. Of course, we discussed how her lifelong journey to merge her interest in the aesthetics and science of haircare inspired Cécred.
Tune in as we discuss:
- Why she believes that caring for Black hair is a revolutionary act of love
- The rodeo’s influence on her family’s life through generations
- Advice to younger stylists about building strong relationships with their clients
- The beauty icons that inspired her early sense of style and beauty
- The successes and challenges her team encountered while developing Cécred

| 0:00.0 | Hello, hello, it's Brooke DeVard and you're listening to the Naked Beauty podcast. Today we are running it back to one of my all-time favorite episodes of naked beauty. And it's my favorite for so many reasons. One, this was an episode that Sir John and I were so looking forward to doing together. When we first came together and said, okay, we're going to do this limited run interviewing people that are iconic to the culture. we were like, it has to be Miss Tina. |
| 0:02.2 | One of the things we got has to be Miss Tina. |
| 0:21.2 | One of the things we got to talk to Miss Tina about was just her experience raising these two amazing girls. |
| 0:26.5 | And at the time, even though I wasn't publicly sharing it yet, I was pregnant. |
| 0:30.6 | So it was really fun to just hear from Miss Tina about how to raise strong women and just her approach to raising Beyonce and so long. |
| 0:37.3 | One of the questions I slipped in was like, how do you, you know, pay attention to two kids who are really different, knowing that I had a second on the way. And I just loved her answer. I'm recording this on a weekend, and Jadie's with me now. Jade, you want to say hi to the naked beauty audience, your podcast debut? Yeah. What else? What else? |
| 0:55.0 | Well said. |
| 0:57.9 | Okay, you guys heard her. |
| 0:59.2 | Her podcast debut. |
| 1:00.5 | So it was this incredible interview for Sir John and I, and Sir John and I have still |
| 1:03.9 | remained so close. |
| 1:04.8 | I'm actually shooting with him tomorrow morning, so Monday morning when you guys are |
| 1:08.2 | listening to this, we are going to be on set. |
| 1:10.2 | I convinced him to do something for Refinery 29, which I am so, so excited about. I am loving this job so much. It is a lot of work, but it's so rewarding. And I'm just loving being able to create on a higher level than I've been able to before. And the content's going to be so, so good. Make sure you stay tuned for that coming in September. |
| 1:31.5 | We're doing a shoot that focuses on makeup and hair and nails and fashion. |
| 1:37.1 | It's the fall style forecast, which we really tapped the best in the industry to do this storytelling. |
| 1:38.0 | And when it comes to hair, I was really impressed with how much Tina Knowles knew, right? |
| 1:43.8 | I think when this episode came out, |
| 1:46.0 | sacred was, again, it had just just launched, and so the jury was out. I think a lot of people |
| 1:50.2 | thought I just loved Sacred because, of course, I love Beyonce and everything she does. But at this |
| 1:55.4 | point, there's no debate about how good Sacred products are. Sacred, it is truly my go-to, the moisturizing shampoo, the clarifying shampoo, the deep conditioner, |
| 2:04.4 | the protein restructuring mask, like the hair oil, the moisture lotion, I use that for my son. |
