Hello, hello, welcome to your extra Friday slash weekend news video.

0:03.2

My name of course is Philip DeFranco, and today we're going to be talking about a city

0:06.2

that you have most likely never heard of. A city with no roads, no plumbing, no

0:10.2

sewage system, no laws, their Pokemon Go spawn rates are probably horrible, but it does have people and gold.

0:15.9

Specifically, lots and lots of gold. The town is called La Rinconada and it is the highest

0:19.8

permanent human settlement in the world, sitting at almost three miles above sea level in the Andes mountains of Peru.

0:25.1

And those mountains have made Peru the biggest producer of gold in Latin America, 2.5 billion dollars of which is estimated to be mined illegally each year. Which brings us back to Laurinkonado which is actually just a small part of the illegal

0:36.4

gold trade. In the 90s the city was just a small mining camp with only a few hundred gold miners.

0:40.4

0:55.0

is almost entirely fueled by gold mines.

0:57.2

And with this surge of people, it has caused the city to become overcrowded, dirty, chaotic, and

1:01.3

with living conditions unlike any other.

1:03.2

Difficult, also is here, I've seen

1:06.2

that the other is in contrast to the visco of the Lord of

1:10.4

the R.

1:11.4

And then talking about those living conditions, average temperatures there are just 4 degrees

1:17.1

Celsius. Your neighborhoods are more like shantytowns with houses made of

1:20.4

tin sheets and no insulation, there's also no running water or pavement.

1:24.0

There's also no sewage system, so there is waste everywhere
