| 0:25.1 | And those mountains have made Peru the biggest producer of gold in Latin America, 2.5 billion dollars of which is estimated to be mined illegally each year. Which brings us back to Laurinkonado which is actually just a small part of the illegal |
| 0:36.4 | gold trade. In the 90s the city was just a small mining camp with only a few hundred gold miners. |
| 0:40.4 | But since then tens of thousands of workers have moved there hoping to secure work and |
| 0:43.8 | stake their claim to gold turning it from this kind of small mining camp into an illegal |
| 0:47.6 | town. And while the Peruvian government has introduced legislation to shut down |
| 0:50.6 | illegal mines, the population in this city is still growing, and the city's economy |
| 0:55.0 | is almost entirely fueled by gold mines. |
| 0:57.2 | And with this surge of people, it has caused the city to become overcrowded, dirty, chaotic, and |
| 1:01.3 | with living conditions unlike any other. |
