I welcome my colleague, Veronique de Rijee, of the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, writing

creator's syndicate about Donald Trump in tariffs. Donald Trump's administration and tariffs.

We haven't seen what we're told is coming yet, but in any event, tariffs are understood uniformly.

I hear it every morning on the Financial Times broadcast out of London. Tariffs are understood as

inflationary and out of date and damaging

to the population that is issuing the tariffs, damaging to the population that receives the tariffs,

damaging the world trade. Bad, bad, bad, bad. And yet,

Veronique, is there an easy way to explain what it is that the Trump administration finds

in tariffs that apparently is not in the playbook of all the experts I hear from London?

Good evening to you. Good evening, John. Well, listen, if there's one thing on which President

Trump is extremely consistent in the last four or five

decades, is like he's always loved tariffs. His economics is not good about tariffs, but he loves

tariffs. He sees them as a way to raise money. He sees them as a way to write some wrong about international

trade. He sees them as a way to bully, let's not be afraid of using this word, other

countries into doing what he wants to do. Now, I don't, I don't agree about using tariffs this way.

And I think it actually will backfire, unfortunately,

because Americans don't like higher prices.

And one thing we know for sure is that tariffs raise the price of things on which they're applied.

But at least, he is very consistent.

And this is also why I think that all the scheming of the Republican Party to kind of

try to divert him from tariffs is very useless.
