Summary

Derick Lugo was not a typical thru-hiker.

A suave, manicured New Yorker, he wasn't into hiking and had never been camping. But one day, he decided to challenge himself by doing the Appalachian Trail.

Derick's memoir, The Unlikely Thru-Hiker, is a delightfully cheerful account of his journey, and on this episode, he joins us to talk about it.

We discuss the warm welcome Derick received on the A.T. as a hiker of color; we talk about how the generosity he experienced on the trail shifted his habits back home; and we share the highly entertaining story behind his trail name. Plus: why you shouldn't fear stepping outside your comfort zone.

When you picture a through hiker, what comes to mind?

0:17.2

Scruffy beard, dirty clothes, lots of body odor. You probably also assume that if someone is doing

0:24.6

a through hike, they are an avid hiker. And, let's face it, more than likely, you assume they're white.

None of this was true for today's guest. When Derek Lugo decided to hike the Appalachian Trail, he was a suave New Yorker,

0:42.9

clean, manicured, accustomed to life in a big city.

He was not a hiker, and he had never camped.

0:51.5

But one day, he decided to hike all the way from Georgia to Maine. He wrote a memoir about

his experience on the A-T. It's called The Unlikely Thru Hiker, and he joins us today to talk about it.

1:12.9

experience didn't really wasn't really outdoorsy like what went into that decision I'm a big

1:18.9

reader and about 15 years ago maybe a little bit longer someone handed me a book and said read this

1:27.2

it's it's hilarious,

1:29.3

you're going to love it. And it was a walk in the woods by Bill Bryson. And yes, it was hilarious.

1:34.9

I loved it. It was entertaining. But the one thing that stuck out was this thing, this trail,

1:40.5

that he made sound so hard. And throughout my life, I've been all about challenges and for me it was

1:48.1

just a challenge and it was more so a challenge because I had never done anything like that

1:52.3

before so I said why not I'm sure people do this all the time turns out you know normally

1:57.9

if you do a through hike you've hikediked it before. So in my mind, it was,

2:04.6

I had just came back from Italy. I spent almost a year there. So when I came back, I had

2:10.6

several months to just do whatever I wanted to do. And hiking the Appalachian Trail was one of those things where it was almost like a

2:21.4

pipe dream where, yeah, I'll do it one day.
