My name is Jeff, and today Greg and I are going to be talking about mountain bikes in wilderness.

So a group of mountain bikers is working right now to end the blanket ban on bicycles in federally designated wilderness areas, which is not an easy task.

Compounding the difficulty is the fact that not all mountain bikers agree that this is even a wise thing for us to do.

So today we're going to talk about the latest developments in this fight and lay out some of the

arguments for and against bikes in wilderness.

To get this discussion started and make sure that everybody understands exactly what the issue is,

Greg, talk about what wilderness is, and we're talking about capital W wilderness as it's defined and understood here in the USA.

So the definition of wilderness, or one definition put forth, is an area where the earth and

community of life are untrammeled by man,

where man himself is a visitor and does not remain.

And that's more of a philosophical definition of wilderness, but they do take that into the

interpretation of the law.

But more specifically, this is an area of undeveloped federal land that retains its like what they would call primeval character.

There's no permanent improvements, no permanent human habitation, and it's protected and managed to preserve that natural condition.
