Summary

DREAM WITH US, and we’ll teach you how to interpret them!

Motivation rises from conscious and unconscious dynamics. We can reason with ourselves to take logical action while our libido flows with its own intelligence. When these two aspects align, we find ourselves acting decisively and effectively with remarkable freedom. When we’re at odds with the secret intelligence of the unconscious, we can find ourselves uncomfortably suspended. As we honor the autonomy of Psyche and cultivate a curious friendship with it, we can discover a creative collaboration that sets us in a fresh direction aligned with the Self.

Thank you. We're going to be talking today about motivation.

0:51.4

And motivation comes from a Latin word that means to move.

1:00.3

So what moves us? Why are we moved? Educators want to figure out how to motivate children,

1:07.1

bosses want to figure out how to motivate employees. We may find that we're lacking motivation where we wish we had it, and we may be motivated to do things that we somehow wish we didn't want to do.

1:14.4

So what is motivation? Where does it come from? And most of all, how can we understand that from a Jungian frame?

1:22.4

What I discovered from our good friends, Miriaman Webster, is they define motivation as an act or process of giving someone a reason to do something.

1:38.7

And I thought that was a really interesting sort of cognitively oriented definition that made me smile because all I could think

And as a one time long ago special ed teacher with adolescents, I've well experienced the

failures of reason, which is very different from consequences.
