host and reporter at the Automotive News. The push to develop and deploy robot taxis is

often framed as a race. That's a poor way to think about how self-driving

technology is reaching the road. Some companies are testing in one city versus another. Some

companies are driving primarily at night, and some more so during the day. Some are

developing their own vehicles and some are working with traditional

manufacturers. Some are running their own ridehailing

ridehailing networks and some are working with the likes of Uber and lift.

You get my point.

This is more like a three-dimensional chessboard with each company plotting its own path

while considering any number of variables.

Vice President of Autonomy at Motional, the joint venture between

Hyundai and Aptive that intends to start commercial service in Las Vegas by the end of this year.
