Ashley Buzzard has pleaded not guilty to killing her nine-year-old daughter, Melody, during an emotional arraignment in Santa Barbara County Superior Court. The 40-year-old was arraigned on charges of first-degree murder, lying in weight and related firearm charges in the death of her daughter, whose remains were found December 6th in a remote area of Utah. The courtroom erupted

in gasps as Buzzard pleaded not guilty to all charges. Police alleged Buzzard shot and killed

Melody during a multi-state road trip in October before returning alone to Santa Barbara County.

Sheriff's officials say Buzzard rented a vehicle and wore wigs and other disguises and was seen on

video swapping license plates and backing into gas stations to avoid detection.

Cartridge casings found near the Utah crime scene matched an expended casing found during a search of Buzzard's home.

Investigators believe the killing occurred around October 9th.

Buzzard's preliminary hearing is scheduled for January 7th.
