C.S. Lewis wrote a short piece years ago called X-Mis and Christmas, a lost chapter from Herodotus.

And he talks about this made-up place called Niatirub, which is Britain spelled backwards,

where most of the people celebrated X-mas, but there were still

some people who celebrated this other holiday Christmas. And the people who celebrated X-Mus,

that was the secular holiday in this made-up town. Oh, this is purely hypothetical. They rushed

frantically to buy X-mas cards for one another.

And C.S. Lewis said, and because all men must send these cards, the marketplace is filled with the crowds of those buying them, so that there is great labor and weariness.

And then people send gifts. For every citizen has to guess the value of the gift, which every friend will send to him

so that he may send one of equal value, whether he can afford it or not. There's 50 days of

preparation, which is called the X-Miss Rush. But when the day of the festival comes, most of the

citizens being exhausted with the rush lie in bed till noon.

But then in the evening, they eat five times as much supper as on other days, and they become intoxicated.
