Summary

One of the greatest controversies in American archaeology involves the debate over when the first people arrived in the New World, and long at the center of the debate has been the South American site of Monte Verde, where research that began decades ago produced evidence of a human presence there as early as 14,500 years ago.

While marking the beginning of a major paradigm shift in the archaeological world, the site has remained at the heart of the debate over when the first Americans arrived, which has seen its latest challenge in a new paper published in the journal Science. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we examine the newest findings and weigh them against the body of data that argues the existence of a "Pre-Clovis" cultural presence in the Americas.

Boy, do we have a show in store for you this week because one of the greatest controversies

Yes, this involves a major upset,

and it's also an area of archaeology that is very near and dear to my heart.

1:17.9

I have spent many years studying the enigma of not only what is known as the Clovis culture,

but also the mounting evidence in recent decades that there are sites older than Clovis

in the Americas. That idea was once heretical, the kind of thing that led to career suicide.

1:36.4

If you went out there and said that you believe that there had been people in the Americas earlier

than about 13,500 years ago.

But there were a few archaeological mavericks who kept going out there and finding data

And the newly established paradigm in North American and South American archaeology

became the idea that there were people here earlier than the Clovis culture in the Americas.

And in fact it was a South American site all the way down in southern Chile known as Monteverde,
